Sockets, Links & Chromatics
CoreItems have colored sockets for skill gems — the right colors and links are crucial for your build.
What it is
Most equipment has sockets (1–6 depending on item size and level). Sockets can be Red (Strength), Green (Dexterity), or Blue (Intelligence). Gems of matching color go in sockets. Connected (linked) sockets mean gems in them interact — active skills are boosted by linked support gems. Getting the right socket colors and links is a major part of gearing.
When you encounter it
Sockets appear on gear from Act 1. You'll quickly realize your Fireball gem needs a Blue socket, or your Melee gem needs Red.
Key concepts
- •Orb of Chromatic changes socket colors — higher Strength gear rolls more Red sockets
- •Orb of Fusing links existing sockets — 6-linking an item requires many Fusings on average
- •The color a socket is likely to roll depends on the item's attribute requirements
- •4-linked items are typically sufficient through the campaign; 5 or 6-links matter in maps
- •The Vorici method (crafting bench) lets you guarantee up to 3 specific socket colors at a price
Tips for new players
- 💡Don't burn Chromatics trying to get off-color sockets on high-requirement gear — it's very expensive
- 💡Check your item's base requirements: Strength = likely Red, Dex = Green, Int = Blue
- 💡A 5-link body armour is a big upgrade — don't be afraid to use Fusings to get one
- 💡The Crafting Bench in your hideout can set sockets and links for fixed costs
